Donyale LunaThe first notable African American fashion model and the first black cover girl. In March 1966 she became the first African American model to appear on the cover of Vogue, a foreign issue. Earlier, she had appeared on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar. Luna gets my respect for standing up for herself when she was described as black or Negro & not for her work. Time Magazine once called her “unquestionably the hottest model in Europe” when she was 20 years old.
