What a Woman: Leonor Fini

omg i am VERY UPSET that i had never heard of this woman and her awesomeness before

so excuse me while i post some a-ma-zing quotes from the article linked at the source:

Queen of the Paris art world, she was constantly in the news - fêted for her paintings, illustrations, theatre designs and, above all, her flamboyant bohemian lifestyle.
She knew how to attract attention and her antics never failed to make the headlines. She would dye her hair blue, orange, red or gold and attend private views and parties dressed as a man, or wearing nothing but white boots and a cape of white feathers. ‘I have always loved, and lived, my own theatre,’ she once said.

Fini was often helped by her influential friends. The painter Max Ernst, who became her lover, introduced her to André Breton and the surrealists. She refused to kowtow to Breton, whose misogyny was legendary, and didn’t become a member of the group, but was still included in their exhibitions.

Never a slave to convention, she produced the first erotic male nude ever painted by a woman, in 1942. In this brave image, the passivity of the sleeping boy invites one to imagine caressing his prone body. A strange series followed in which the artist, often in the guise of a sphinx, watches over a sleeping youth whose androgynous beauty emphasises the role reversal implicit in the image.

ok no i’m going to stop or i’ll copypasta the WHOLE THING because oh god so much amazing stuff, so go READ THIS
